The dark side of social networking - OCRegister.com

"Here’s some advice from Dr. Donald Patterson — director of the Laboratory for Ubiquitous Computing and Interaction at UCI .... about pondering the dark side of social networking."

"Consider how the software will use your location and whether or not you are making yourself vulnerable by letting people know where you are — or where you aren’t — before giving software permission to use your location information."

Very relevant point that we allow social media sites to lull us into whom we see as "friends". It is also very important to realize that when you publish information on these sites that it can end up in places you would not expect.

I like to follow my USA Today rule. If I would be embarrassed to have this published on the front page of the USA Today, why publish it at all?

Now I realize that would kill Twitter, most facebook updates, and all Myspace bulletins.

But it can keep you from missing out on a job, a date, a great opportunity, etc.

Be wary of what you say cause the internet doesn't forget.

Dude...If the main reason you are leaving a comment is to get people to go to your site to buy something, don't bother leaving your comment. I review and delete comments like that anyway.
