Follow up from UBICOMP 2008:

At UBICOMP 2008, during the town hall meeting, there was a bit of reflection on what we had accomplished as an academic community in the last 10 years. Some people argued that the impact had been negligible, others argued that UBICOMP's impact had been significant.

As I was thinking about these things I flipped through the guide book in my hotel room in Korea. This was the guide book that all the guests in the hotel had access to and which offered prepackaged tours of various interesting things around Seoul. A scan of a couple of the pages is above. What shocked me was the detail from the upper right page reproduced below. After reading this I felt pretty compelled to believe that UBICOMP has had an impact in the last 10 years. Certainly in Korea anyway.
