Richard Stallman is the Chief Gnu of the Free Software Foundation, the organization responsible for a substantial part of the utility of GNU/Linux system. He is also the intellectual father of the GNU General Public Licence, one of the most disruptive manifestos of the software age. He will speak on: ** The Danger of Software Patents ** "Richard Stallman launched the development of the GNU operating system (see www.gnu.org) in 1984. GNU is free software: everyone has the freedom to copy it and redistribute it, as well as to make changes either large or small. The GNU/Linux system, basically the GNU operating system with Linux added, is used on tens of millions of computers today. Stallman has received the ACM Grace Hopper Award, a MacArthur Foundation fellowship, the Electronic Frontier Foundation's Pioneer award, and the the Takeda Award for Social/Economic Betterment, as well as several honorary doctorates." 10:00am on Friday Nov 2nd at the CalIT2 Auditorium. PARC Internship opportunity -- info, application, flyer
From PARC (Palo Alto Research Center):
Every year, PARC invites highly qualified students to apply to our internship program. As one of the most prolific innovation centers in the world, we offer a truly exceptional internship experience.
Considered valuable members of our community, our interns are fully integrated into the daily activities of PARC's highly collaborative, multidisciplinary culture. PARC interns have the opportunity to:
• work with leading researchers in the physical, computer, biological, and social sciences;
• pursue independent projects;
• engage in different stages of the research or business-development pipeline;
• participate in lab meetings, presentations, poster sessions, and special programs;
• receive authorship on publications or patents.
A number of PARC employees also started their careers here as interns, and previous interns overwhelmingly described their internships as one of “…the best experiences of my life, personally as well as professionally.”

INF 290: Recent Research in Ubiquitous Computing
|
Announcing the Fall Quarter 2007 Reading Group: This reading group will continue the work from previous quarters of reviewing recent literature in the Ubiquitous and Pervasive Computing communities. The emphasis will be on developing a familiarity with trends and directions being developed by active researchers. This quarter we will be reviewing papers from Pervasive 2008. A schedule will be located at the URL above after our first meeting. |
The course code is 37307. If you are a student please register, although if that's a problem don't let it prevent you from coming anyway. We will meet Thursdays from 12:30 to 1:30pm in DBH 5011.
On the weeks when papers are presented, they are presented by attenders. Powerpoint is discouraged. This is also a forum for students to give practice talks of interest to the audience if they would like to arrange for such a thing. In the past this has been done with much success.
Feel free to bring your lunch.
The first meeting will be tomorrow 10/3/2007. At this meeting we will organize and assign papers.
Please feel free to email Don or Nick Noack if you have any questions regarding the course.
Thanks,
Don
