Congratulations to LUCI grad students Lynn Dombrowski, Jed Brubaker, Sen Hirano and LUCI faculty Melissa Mazmanian and Gillian R. Hayes on having a paper conditionally accepted to UBICOMP 2013!
It takes a network to get dinner: Designing location-based systems to address local food needs
“Based on an 18 month qualitative study that included the creation and testing of design considerations and a prototype location-based information system (LBIS), this research provides empirical insight into the daily practices of a wide variety of individuals working to address food insecurity in one county. Qualitative fieldwork reveals that nonprofit organizations in the food assistance ecology engage in location-based information practices that could be enhanced by the design of a LBIS. Two practices that would benefit from a collaborative LBIS are 1) practices of matching in which non-profit workers help individuals who are seeking assistance to food resources and 2) practices of distribution in which nonprofit workers help organizations access and deliver food resources to clients. In order to support such practices across organizations the cooperative design component of this research suggests that an LIBS should: support the role of intermediaries who engage in practices of matching and distribution; provide interactive mapping tools that match resources to need; enable organizations to control visibility over specific data; foster network resilience by decentralizing data management across the ecology of organizations working toward an overarching mission, and document various accounts of impact. This research further suggests that designers should explore the wide variety of spatial patterns that must align and overlap such that ecologies of nonprofit organizations might synergistically work together to address pressing social needs.”

Congrats to LUCI grad student John Brock for receiving a Summer Fellowship to attend the Data Science for Social Good program at the University of Chicago.
“It’s wonderful to see so many people with great analytics, machine learning, and data mining skills and such a passion for doing good in the world. “
About the program
Fellows will work in small teams with mentors from the Obama campaign analytics team and seasoned data scientists from academia and business on high-impact projects in education, healthcare, energy, transportation, and more.
This full-time program is selective, intensive, and hands-on:
- You’ll work with nonprofits and governments to solve big problems with data.
- You’ll learn how to apply statistics, machine learning, and big data technologies to problems that matter.- And you’ll work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams.
Our advisors include Eric Schmidt (Google), Rayid Ghani (former Chief Scientist for Obama 2012 campaign), and Jake Porway (DataKind).

Thanks for a great quarter everyone!
So long Khai! No more fake blood. New rule: no regifting from previous year’s LUCI White Elephant gifts. It’s mean to steal My Little Pony coloring books from kindergarteners even if you are a sixth grader going for fake Unicorn Meat. And Andy looks great wearing a pineapple.
Sen has more photos. Google+ him to see them.

Are you recovering from the emotional scarring which is caused by CHI reviews? Well so is Informatics Ph.D. student Bart Knijnenberg. But will he wallow in self-despair, no!
Instead he has produced CHI Paper Review Bingo. Turn your silent stewing into a public airing of your grievances. Try CHI Paper Review Bingo and post your result on Twitter with hash tag #chipaperbingo.

Department of Anthropology faculty, Bill Maurer, director of the Institute for Money, Technology and Financial Inclusion, with a team of curators, has put together a very interesting exhibit called “Gold to Gigabytes: The Past, Present, and Future of Money” It’s a sibling exhibit to one that is on display in The British Museum. Our’s is on display at the UCI Langson Library just after you walk in.
The opening of the exhibit is going on now. It is a really incredible score for our library and UCI! The LUCI lab participated in this exhibit in two ways: We provided a physical bitcoin model which you can see in the case. This wouldn’t have been possible without Prof. Hayes‘ foresight in purchasing a 3D printer and Ph.D. Student Sen Hirano’s expertise in making it work. We also provided a video loop of the first sequence of transactions in the bitcoin network graphically displayed.
Swing by the library and take a look!

Thanks everyone for coming to the LUCI Fall Kick-Off Retreat!
There are some follow on items to take care of which you should see info about in your email.
Here is a picture of all the food labels from the potluck. It kind of cracked me up (although I appreciate the attention to ingredients).

Dr. Garnet Hertz, center, helps students Jes Koepfler, from the University of Maryland, left, and Anthony Hoffman of the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee build an arduino, an open source single board micro controller at a workshop at UCI for doctoral students to build projects focused on a values-based approach to technology design. by SAM GANGWER, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER
The Values in Design Lab, founded by Informatics faculty members, is hosting a workshop this week. The O.C. Register covered it in an article posted today:
“The Values In Design lab launched earlier this year at UCI brings together researchers from computer science, engineering and the humanities in an effort to devise ways to design technology for the future that is responsible and inclusive, in turn enabling organizations to create better relationships with their users later on. Researchers in the lab focus on building values like privacy, community, trust, dignity, security, respect and freedom from bias into future technological systems and this week 36 doctoral students from North America and Europe are at UCI working with faculty in a weeklong workshop on the subject.”
…
“How do we get more participation and more breadth of participation in our design work?” asked Bowker. “We all need to become designers.”
Jed, apparently the most mediagenic member of our lab, is liberally quoted. :)

kinectable_pipe is a command-line utility that dumps user skeleton data from a Microsoft Kinect device to a standard Unix pipe.
Why?
Because Kinect programming is a pain in the neck, and by trivializing the device’s output into a simple text format, it becomes infinitely easier to digest in the scripting language of your choice.
This seems simple to the point of being almost useless
Yes, that’s the point. Do One Thing and Do It Well. There’s an accompanying rubygem that will add all the smart stuff like advanced gesture recognition, events, etc.
I tried it. It worked:

Hot on the heels of the public announcement of the Intel Science and Technology Center for Social Computing is this article in the LA Times. There’s not much new information in it, but its an important venue!
“UC Irvine is the research hub, with four other campuses participating. The university will receive $5 million over five years, with an additional $7.5 million being split among the other universities.
Experts from those schools, which include Cornell University, Indiana University, the Georgia Institute of Technology and New York University, specialize in anthropology, media studies, digital humanities, philosophy and computer science, among other disciplines.
Each year, the research center will explore a new defining theme, the first being restoring “materiality” to information. Researchers will explore the “connection of information to the physical world,” Dourish said.
Intel researchers will work with dozens of faculty members and graduate and doctoral students in the campus labs. The research will not be owned by Intel but will instead be public, open intellectual property, the university said.” [citation]
