Javascript demo of a Bubble Cursor - September 23rd, 2010
See this paper for more info: The bubble cursor: enhancing target acquisition by dynamic resizing of the cursor’s activation area
Abstract of paper that explains what this is about:
“We present the bubble cursor – a new target acquisition technique based on area cursors. The bubble cursor improves upon area cursors by dynamically resizing its activation area depending on the proximity of surrounding targets, such that only one target is selectable at any time. We also present two controlled experiments that evaluate bubble cursor performance in 1D and 2D target acquisition tasks, in complex situations with multiple targets of varying layout densities. Results show that the bubble cursor significantly outperforms the point cursor and the object pointing technique [8], and that bubble cursor performance can be accurately modeled and predicted using Fitts’ law.”

“Hi Kiosk! Help me plz. Performative interactions in a restaurant” - September 14th, 2010
Congratulations to Informatics grad student, Vrishti Gulati and Informatics faculty member Bonnie Nardi on having their paper, “Hi Kiosk! Help me plz. Performative interactions in a restaurant.”, accepted to the Ubicomp 2010- Designing for Performative Interactions in Public Spaces Workshop
Abstract:The paper explores issues of performance and identity in interactions with a self service kiosk in a fast food restaurant. This is studied in context of a youth populated site-a fast food restaurant at a University Campus. I conducted ethnography in a Jack in the Box restaurant, a popular American chain. The focus is looking at performative aspects in social and public settings. All interactions with the kiosk—the choice of using it to order food, glances, playful interactions, and looks when others are using it— are viewed as exhibits of performance. Even non-interactions and ignorance of the kiosk display an aspect of performance.
Congratulations Vrishti and Bonnie!

Sikuli replays GUI macros using computer vision - June 10th, 2010
Coming out of MIT’s CSAIL is a gui-macro-recording program, called Sikuli, that uses computer vision algorithms to replay GUI scripts. Because it doesn’t hook into anything except the screen rendering subsystem, you don’t have to know AppleScript or any other API to make it work. The computer vision algorithm is tolerant of the click-target moving around the screen and the researchers claim it is somewhat tolerant to changes in the visual appearance of the click-target as well.
It is based on Jython, and available for downloading on Mac (yeah!) and Windows. I think this is one of those programs that if you need it, you need it badly!
This is one of a series of HCI projects that are coming out now which mod the UI using the raw pixels as a guide. The other one I’ve seen recently is by James Fogarty and crew at UW called Prefab. Videos for both systems are embedded below.

What if Your Twitter Followers Really Followed You? - June 4th, 2010
One of the major telecom companies in Japan, KDDI, released a web app called IS Parade (?) that turns your twitter account into a parade. A parade in which your followers, follow you. It is a fun visualization to play with. I recorded a low-res sample below. They also have a strangely addictive abstract interactive visualization on their product homepage, located here.

Virtual Pottery Wheel - June 3rd, 2010
Rapid prototyping or 3-D printing is a disruptive technology that is becoming more and more accessible. Writers like Bruce Sterling have explored the relationship between real and virtual objects through RFID technology and 3-D printing in many books and stories. Fast Company has reported on an installation in which visitors use a virtual pottery wheel to craft a digital model, which can then be printed out later if desired.
At the “Design by Performance” exhibition at Z33 in Belgium, Unfold, a Belgian design firm founded by Claire Warnier and Dries Verbruggen, and designer Tim Knapen installed something they call “L’Artisan Electronique” (“The Electronic Artisan). Composed of a 3-D laser scanner and a RepRap–a cheap, open-source, DIY 3-D-printer–the installation allowed visitors to craft a virtual piece of pottery. All of the pieces created by users were projected onto the wall. And each morning, a selection of the previous day’s creations were printed on the RepRap.

Interactive Visual Supports for Children with Autism - May 27th, 2010
Congratulations to Informatics faculty member Gillian Hayes and Informatics grad students Sen Hirano, Gabriela Marcu, Mohamad Monibi, David H. Nguyen, and Michael Yeganyan on having their paper, ‘Interactive Visual Supports for Children with Autism‘ accepted to Personal and Ubiquitous Computing Journal.
“Interventions to support children with autism often include the use of visual supports, which are cognitive tools to enable learning and the production of language. Although visual supports are effective in helping to diminish many of the challenges of autism, they are difficult and time-consuming to create, distribute, and use. In this paper, we present the results of a qualitative study focused on uncovering design guidelines for interactive visual supports that would address the many challenges inherent to current tools and practices. We present three prototype systems that address these design challenges with the use of large group displays, mobile personal devices, and personal recording technologies. We also describe the interventions associated with these prototypes along with the results from two focus group discussions around the interventions. We present further design guidance for visual supports and discuss tensions inherent to their design.”

Collaborative Filtering and Carbon Footprint Calculation - January 18th, 2010
Congratulations to Informatics graduate student Joel Ross, Computer Science undergraduate student Nitin Shantharam, and Informatics faculty Bill Tomlinson on having their paper,
‘Collaborative Filtering and Carbon Footprint Calculation’ accepted to ISSST 2010.
This paper describes the design of the Better Carbon calculator, a carbon footprint calculator which uses collaborative filtering and location-based calculation to provide an individual footprint estimate while simultaneously affecting and improving the estimates for other people in a user’s community.
Congratulations Joel, Nitin, and Bill!

Nissan Leaf Electric Car has some interesting interactions - December 15th, 2009

Leaf Dashboard Display
The Technology Review has an interesting report out about how the all-electric Nissan Leaf will be helping transition drivers from a gas-based fuel infrastructure to an electric one. It is particularly interesting to notice how email, mobile and location-aware applications become part of a user’s interactions with the car:
“The Leaf’s dashboard display will show remaining battery life, the location of charging stations, and which stations are within range. When the car gets low on power, the driver can put it into a “limp” mode so it drives at the most-efficient speed to ensure it gets there.”
Once the driver plugs a car into a charging station, Nissan sends e-mail updates on how the charge is progressing, and when it’s done. And finally, the owner can use a mobile device to switch on the car’s electric air-conditioner or heater before detaching it from the charging station, so as not to waste battery life after pulling away.
