“The cellular weapon of choice in Japan would be the Panasonic P905i, a fancy cellphone that doubles as a 3-inch TV and features 3-G, GPS, a 5.1-megapixel camera, and motion sensors for Wii-style games. ‘When I show this to visitors from the US, they’re amazed,’ according to journalist Nobi Hayashi, who adds, ‘Carrying around an iPhone in Japan would make you look pretty lame.

From WCVB Boston via Slashdot

“CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Cambridge may be one of the first cities in the nation to squash a move to put surveillance cameras on city streets, saying it’s worried about residents’ privacy rights, but the decision may end up costing the city the more than a quarter of a million dollars that’s already been spent on the project.

“Because of the slow erosion of our civil liberties since 9/11, it is important to raise questions regarding these cameras,” said Marjorie Decker, a Cambridge city councilor.”

Georgia mulls ban on covert GPS trackers - February 10th, 2009

From : Ars Technica

“Georgia legislators are pushing for a ban on the covert use of GPS tracking devices—but if lojacking people without their consent violates privacy rights, should police remain free to do it without a warrant?

According to a slew of federal court rulings, police can use hidden tracking devices to monitor the public movements of a person or vehicle without bothering with a court order, since these devices don’t violate any “reasonable expectation of privacy.” But the sponsors of a bill making its way through the Georgia General Assembly think these GPS trackers do violate a privacy interest worth protecting—at least when they’re used by private citizens.”

Mo put together a great set of resources for Android development for anyone interested. It was for the grad Intro to UBICOMP course (INF 241) but surely to be of broad interest. In fact he’s having a hacking session today in DBH 4011 if you want to piggyback in today’s class.

Android Development Guide

“Here is a set of links that I recommend you follow to get up to speed with Android development. Most of these are from the official documentation page. I feel like the documentation isn’t arranged too great, not everything is where you’d expect, making some things hard to find. In fact, while compiling this list, I came upon some very useful pages that I had missed up to this point. The order of these links are slightly different from the official documentation, and I skip a lot of areas, so make sure you look at the rest of the documentation based on your needs. ”

Wireless Detectors for Dementia - February 2nd, 2009

A little love from the article her: Technology Review: Wireless Detectors for Dementia

“Researchers hope that radio transmitters can warn of cognitive decline earlier.”

“Donald Patterson, a professor of informatics at the University of California, Irvine, says that the USF approach is more straightforward that those designed to monitor complex activities. “The more you get into the straight biological measurements . . . the easier it becomes,” he says.”
